Job Description

Full Time Psychiatrist to serve as Department Chair for a Large Public Health and Hospital System in Silicon Valley

Better Health for All

County of Santa Clara Health System (CSCHS), a large public teaching healthcare system, affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine, is seeking a full-time BC psychiatrist to serve as the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry.

We offer the unparalleled opportunity to gain the long-term personal and professional satisfaction of serving our patients and our diverse community, while participating in the education of the next generation of health care providers, in one of the best places to live in the United States.

About Our Organization

Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) is the second-largest County-owned health and hospital system in California. The system and its providers are committed to improving the health of the 1.9 million people of Santa Clara County with multiple acute care hospitals (over 1000 licensed beds), a network of primary care clinics comprised of eleven health centers throughout the County, several urgent care clinics, dental services, primary care behavioral health services, and a broad range of specialty services in our Valley Specialty Center.

Providers in our health system also have the opportunity to use our integrated electronic health record (Epic), which brings together systemwide patient information. The Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recognized SCVMC for achieving its highest level of success (Stage 7), based on our continuous innovation and optimization of our inpatient and outpatient EHR.

About the Community

SCVH is located in San Jose, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley, offering a diverse choice of cultural, recreational, and lifestyle opportunities. Our physicians live in a range of communities, including urban (e.g., San Francisco), university (e.g., Palo Alto), high tech (e.g., many cities of Silicon Valley), mountain (e.g., Los Gatos), beach (e.g. Santa Cruz), and rural/agricultural (e.g., Morgan Hill and Gilroy). Situated in one of the most desirable regions of the country – only 45 minutes from the Monterey Bay and three hours from the Sierra Nevada – our physicians have the opportunity to enjoy a very high quality of life.

About the Department

The Department of Psychiatry is staffed with 90 employed psychiatrists, several contracted psychiatrists, psychologists, advanced practice providers, and licensed clinical social workers who provide prevention, education, and treatment to all residents of Santa Clara County, regardless of ability to pay.

The Department of Psychiatry staffs a 24/7 psychiatric emergency room (EPS), a seven-day per week mental health urgent care clinic, where walk-in crisis intervention is available, two inpatient units at the hospital, adult and juvenile custody clinics, and several adult and child/adolescent mental health and substance treatment clinics at various geographically convenient locations in the county.

Our staff are ethnically diverse, and provide trauma informed, culturally appropriate services in a large number of languages, reflective of the diversity of the population in Santa Clara County.

About the Position

The Chair of Psychiatry will oversee departmental strategic direction, clinical operations, quality improvement, faculty development, and the integration of all psychiatric services within the health system. The Chair is responsible for the leadership oversight of all medical staff functions (i.e. OPPE, FPPE, peer review). The Chair will collaborate with other hospital leaders and chairs to ensure delivery of multidisciplinary care and will be responsible for developing and implementing clinical or educational programs for the department. The Chair is required to effectively collaborate and work with the Medical Director of Acute Psychiatry Services (APS).

The successful candidate will have strong clinical experience, proven management, leadership and administrative experience; effective communication skills with proven ability to build trust and consensus; experience working in a large, integrated care delivery system and strong experience with peer review. Experience in acute psychiatric services and inpatient or emergency psychiatric services is preferred. This position comes with dedicated administrative time.
